I never planned to become a CPR instructor. Like most people, I assumed emergencies were something that happened to other families, in other places. Then one day, it happened in mine.
The Day Everything Changed
My husband experienced a sudden cardiac event at home. In that moment, time seemed to stop. The panic was overwhelming. But our son, who had trained as an EMT, was there. He knew exactly what to do. He recognized the signs, started CPR, and kept my husband alive until paramedics arrived. I stood there watching, grateful beyond words but also shaken by a single thought: what if our son had not been home? What if no one in our family had known what to do?
A New Understanding
That experience changed everything for me. I realized that CPR is not just a skill for medical professionals or first responders. It is a skill for parents, for neighbors, for the person sitting next to you at church. The people most likely to be present during a cardiac emergency are not paramedics. They are family members, coworkers, and friends. And most of them have never been trained.
From Student to Instructor
I decided to get certified as a CPR instructor, not to teach in a hospital or a fire station, but to bring training to the places people already gather. Living rooms. Church fellowship halls. Community centers. I wanted to create an experience that felt personal and approachable, not clinical or intimidating. I wanted people to leave feeling empowered, not overwhelmed. Because when the training feels relational, people actually remember what they learned.
Why Community Matters
I have seen what happens when a group of friends or a church congregation learns CPR together. They talk about it afterward. They check on each other. They feel connected by something meaningful. Training in community creates accountability and confidence in a way that watching a video alone never can.
The Mission of NextHeartbeat
That is why I started NextHeartbeat. My mission is simple: every family, every church, every community should have someone who knows what to do when a heart stops beating. I bring the training to you, wherever you are, and I make it something you will actually remember. Because the next heartbeat might depend on the person standing closest. And I believe that person can be you.
